Homework

Derby Moor Academy recognises that Homework is an integral part of learning, aside from supporting the learning which happens across the curriculum it plays an important role in the formation of our student’s positive learning behaviours – resilience, responsibility, resourcefulness and self-discipline. Research from the Government (EEF Toolkit 2023) has proven that purposeful homework tasks can have a 5+ months impact on pupil attainment at secondary school level.

We have carefully designed a homework model that builds knowledge and skills across each year group, from Year 7-13, to ensure that students are developing effective study habits and taking responsibility for their own learning.

It is based on the following principles:

• All homework must be purposeful and linked to classroom learning, it should focus on embedding knowledge or on the purposeful practice of a particular skill.
• The aim and value of the homework should always be made clear to students.
• Students are recognised for the completion of homework via Classcharts.
• Parents are kept informed of their child’s completion of homework by accessing Classcharts and also by reading the ATH grading on their termly report.
• Homework spaces for students will be available to allow students a quiet place to study. Each year group will be assigned a specific time and place where they can work in a supervised and quiet environment.

We hope that this homework model provides clarity for students and their families in regard to the setting and submission of homework. We know that the success of any school system relies on the support of families so we ask our parents and carers to encourage their children to complete homework to ensure we are working together to enable our children to achieve. ‘Together we succeed’.
